Grant Awarded: $1 million
In 2006, we gave $1.0 million to the Israeli Institute for Advanced Studies at Hebrew University to initiate a Scholars at Risk Programme in Israel. Part of the same Scholars at Risk network as Harvard, the programme will support scholars in any discipline and from any country who are at risk of persecution because of their work or the exercise of their basic rights.
The programme will provide short-term academic positions of between four months and one year at Israeli university institutions. It will be administered by the Israeli Institute for Advanced Studies, but final decisions on applications will be taken by the Israeli Committee for Scholars at Risk. The Committee will comprise six members: two (including the Chair) will be nominated by the Israeli Institute for Advanced Studies, and the remaining four will be nominated by the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, drawn from a variety of Israeli universities.
Applicants may be from any background but must meet the academic requirements of Israeli universities. Decisions on applications will be based on the degree of risk to which the candidate is subjected, his or her academic qualifications and the availability of an appropriate host institution.
