Our grant to The Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology will help publish The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, (1879-1955).
The Collected Papers will provide the first complete picture of a prolific written legacy that ranges from Einstein’s first work on special and general theories of relativity, to his expressions of concern about civil liberties, education, Zionism, pacifism and disarmament.
Papers are selected from more than 40,000 documents in Einstein’s personal collection and more than 20,000 Einstein and Einstein-related documents. When complete, the series will contain over 14,000 documents and fill c. 25 volumes. Every document in The Collected Papers will appear in its original language. Upon release of each volume, Princeton University Press will also publish an English translation of previously untranslated documents.
In 2003, the Einstein Papers Project also launched www.alberteinstein.info, which presents 3,000 pages of high-quality photographic images of Einstein’s scientific and non-scientific manuscripts. With the Einstein Archives at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, it hopes to expand the website to include a further 20,000 manuscripts.
The project is part of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division at the California Institute of Technology. It is reviewed annually by an Executive Committee appointed by the Director and general editor of Princeton University Press.
