The Mosfell Archaeological Project (MAP)

Grant Awarded:
$500,000
Excavation work being carried out for the Mosfell Archaeological Project

In 2007, we granted $500,000 to UCLA as a personal research grant for Professor Jesse Byock, and to support research for the Mosfell Archaeological Project. This interdisciplinary project employs tools from archaeology, history, anthropology, forensics, environmental sciences, and saga studies to construct a picture of human habitation and environmental change in the Mosfell region of western Iceland. The Mosfell region is one of the last major valley systems in Northern Europe, providing important insights into early Northern European life.

PROJECT UPDATE:

In 2011, we awarded a series of grants totaling $700,000 to support ongoing work at the Mosfell Archaeological Project.

These grants have been split between UCLA, Vikingaminjar and the Institute for Viking and North Atlantic Studies and will help fund a number of avenues of research.
