Annual summary 2023

In 2023 we awarded $208 million in grants.

We renewed our flagship Endangered Landscapes and Seascapes Programme, restoring hundreds of thousands of hectares of land and sea across Europe. We created a $50m joint fund with Bloomberg Philanthropies to create more marine reserves and awarded $25m to create permanent endowments for millions of hectares of biodiversity hotspots in Colombia, Madagascar and Indonesia. We also approved a further ten years’ support for our long-running Endangered Archives Programme at the British Library, and our open access grant to MIT Press established an endowment to make the academic books it publishes free to read for everyone, forever.
